Direct Access Scheme

The Direct Access Scheme (DAS) permits riders aged 21 or over to take a test on a large motorcycle, which upon successful completion allows them to ride any motorcycle without restrictions.
You must complete a CBT, the motorcycle theory test before you can undertake practical instruction and the practical test.
Direct Access Courses
The DAS courses are listed below
- 2-day Direct Access course (Very experienced riders)
- 3-day Direct Access course (Experienced riders)
- 4-day Direct Access course (Semi-experienced riders)
- 5-day Direct Access course (Novice riders)
- 2-Day Direct Access Course
To undertake a two-day DAS course, you will need to be very competent on a manual bike, for example a person who completed a CBT who has ridden for at least two thousand miles recently, picking up very few faults in their riding style.
This course is subject to an assessment to assess suitability.
Both days are conducted on a 650cc bike to get you accustomed to handling a larger machine. To help you prepare for the practical tests, we conduct mock tests and take you around prospective test routes.
3-Day Direct Access Course
The three-day Direct Access course is for experienced riders of manual bikes and is subject to a one-hour assessment lesson. Day one is conducted on a 125cc machine (either CBT (if you do not already have one) or a day on the road). Days two and three are conducted on road on 650cc bikes, teaching you all you need to know for your test and more.
To undertake a three-day Direct Access course, you will need to be very competent on a bike with standard manual transmission
People who qualify for this course are listed below
- Somebody who has ridden extensively but whose CBT certificate has expired
- Somebody who has ridden extensively in another country but cannot convert their bike licence to a UK one
- Somebody who has a current CBT certificate but has developed flaws in their general roadcraft (missing observations, going too fast, lack of planning etc.)
- Somebody who has completed CBT and has recently ridden approximately one thousand to two thousand miles
4-Day Direct Access Course
The four-day Direct Access course is suitable for the semi-experienced rider. Days one and possibly day two will be taken on a 125cc bike (day one – either CBT or a day on the road), whilst days three and four will take place on a 650cc bike.
To undertake a four-day Direct Access course, you will need to be quite competent on a bike with standard manual transmission. The people who normally need to take this course are listed below
- Somebody who has just completed CBT recently on a manual bike who wishes to progress to a full unrestricted licence
- Somebody who has recent previous experience but whose CBT certificate has expired
- Somebody who has ridden extensively in another country but cannot convert their bike licence to a UK one
- Somebody with extensive automatic experience but no manual experience. To get you up to speed on a manual machine, you would either need to take CBT day one on a geared machine, or book in a one-hour lesson on a manual machine first. Occasionally, riders with just automatic experience benefit most from a five-day course
- Somebody with experience of changing gears on the handlebar, but with no experience of changing gears with the foot. To get you up to speed on a standard manual machine, you would either need to take CBT day one, on one of our standard 125cc machines, or book in a one-hour lesson first and let us assess you at the same time
- Somebody with extensive off-road experience but no on-road experience
5-Day Direct Access Course
The five-day Direct Access course is suitable for a novice rider. The first day will be your CBT, which we like you to take several days before the start of your last four days (they do not have to be consecutive). This is so that should you need further training for CBT, you will have time to complete it without it interfering with the rest of your course. On days one and possibly day two, you will be training on a 125cc bike followed by days three, four and five on a 650cc bike.
The CBT course (day one) needs to be done several days prior to the rest of your training. Days two and three of this course can be separated away from the last two days, or you can keep all of the last four days together. Our training is flexible and we conduct training seven days a week.
Please note: Dependent on your ability and confidence, some students may require a shorter or longer period on a 125cc bike.
125cc automatic now available for CBT and Mod1 and Mod2 training
